Blake, apprenticed as a young man to the master engraver James Basire, was sent to make drawings at Westminster Abbey for a series of engravings required by the Society of Antiquaries. The Gothic monuments and ornaments that he saw here fired his imagination, providing a treasure-trove of inspiration. But perhaps most significantly, medieval culture offered a way of expressing the spiritual intensity of his beliefs, through his art.
