'It is one hundred years on from when Daphne du Maurier first set out to find Menabilly, first entered through the deserted lodge gates with her sister Angela in the autumn of 1926. Past the lodge, into the woods.
There is no sight of Menabilly from the sea or nearby land, no view from Polridmouth cove or what is now called Menabilly beach. It is hidden by dense woods, untouchable, unknowable. We only know of it through du Maurier’s memoirs, novels and correspondence.
We are no nearer to being able to physically experience it as du Maurier did back then. It is still enigmatic and mysterious, and perhaps that is its power.
Join myself and Maggie Humm as we follow in Daphne du Maurier’s footsteps – inspired by her own vividly told recollection in ‘The House of Secrets’, and her unforgettable fiction.' Louisa Albani
